Custom sauna builder in Sonoma
YOURSAUNAS builds custom saunas in Sonoma and the Sonoma Valley, framed from the floor up and wired by our own licensed crew, and in May 2026 we finished one here.
Who builds custom saunas in Sonoma?
YOURSAUNAS does. We are a licensed California general contractor (CSLB license #1150020, Class B), based in Mill Valley in Marin County, and Sonoma is part of our regular North Bay territory. Our Sonoma build was a framed room, not a kit set on a slab.
A custom sauna has to hold high heat, move fresh air, keep moisture out of the framing and draw a large electrical load safely. When one team does the framing, insulation, vapor barrier, ventilation and wiring, each decision is made with the others in view.

A custom 7’ x 8’ sauna, fully framed, May 2026
A custom sauna measuring 7' x 8', fully framed, with the 240V and 120V wiring run by our crew. The 240V circuit is the dedicated supply a sauna heater needs; the 120V side typically serves the room's lighting and other low-power needs. Both were part of the same build, planned with the framing rather than added after it.
What a framed custom sauna involves
A custom room is designed to the space instead of the space being made to fit a box. A framed sauna goes up like a small room: studs, insulation, a vapor barrier on the warm side, and a tongue-and-groove interior in cedar, hemlock or spruce. Benches are built to the room, the heater is sized to the room's volume, and the vents are placed for that heater and that layout.
Size is the first decision. A 7' x 8' room has space for full-length benches; whether that is the right size for you depends on how many people use it at once and how you like to sit or lie. Our what size sauna guide walks through how size, bench layout and heater choice go together, and our kit vs custom guide compares the two paths honestly.
The wiring is the other half. A sauna heater needs its own 240V circuit from the panel, and the panel needs the capacity to carry it. We check that on the first visit, so the electrical plan and the room plan are settled together.
Sonoma’s climate and homes
Sonoma Valley summers are hot and dry, the nights cool off, and the winters bring rain. For an outdoor sauna, that means planning for strong sun and a dry-to-wet seasonal swing: a UV-resistant exterior finish, and a site that drains in winter. Placement for afternoon shade makes a summer evening session more pleasant.
Sonoma ranges from older homes near the town center to newer houses out in the valley. An older house can mean a panel with little spare capacity; a larger property can mean a long run from the panel to the sauna site.
Sauna permits in Sonoma
A new 240V circuit needs an electrical permit, and whether a sauna structure needs a building permit depends on its size, whether it is attached and where it sits on the lot. Inside Sonoma's city limits the City of Sonoma handles it; much of the surrounding valley is unincorporated and goes through Sonoma County instead. We confirm which applies to your address and what your project triggers, file the permits, and meet the inspector. Background in our Bay Area permit guide.

Sonoma sauna FAQ
Sonoma questions, straight answers.
Have you built a sauna in Sonoma?
Yes. In May 2026 we built a custom 7' x 8' sauna in Sonoma: fully framed, with the 240V and 120V wiring run by our own crew.
Why did that sauna need both 240V and 120V wiring?
The heater runs on a dedicated 240V circuit; the lighting and other low-power needs typically run on 120V. Planning both with the framing lets the wiring run inside the walls, and means no second electrician. Our 240V guide explains the heater side.
Is a custom framed sauna worth it over a kit?
It depends on the space. A kit is quicker and can cost less; a framed room fits an odd-shaped space, uses the wood and bench layout you choose, and is built into the house rather than placed in it. We build both, and our kit vs custom guide lays out the trade-offs.
I live outside Sonoma’s city limits, in the valley. Can you build there?
Yes. The difference is the permit office: unincorporated parts of the valley go through Sonoma County rather than the City of Sonoma. We find out which applies and file with them.
Do you come back for service in Sonoma?
Yes. We service any brand across the North Bay; our service and repair visits start from $380.
