Sauna builder in San Francisco
YOURSAUNAS designs, builds, assembles and wires saunas across San Francisco, from a kit set up behind the garage to a custom cabin in a back yard, with one licensed crew based just over the bridge in Mill Valley.
Who builds saunas in San Francisco?
YOURSAUNAS does. We are a licensed California general contractor (CSLB #1150020) that builds custom indoor and outdoor saunas, assembles prefab kits and services existing saunas in every part of the city. The same crew does the carpentry, runs the 240V circuit and sets the ventilation, so a sauna in San Francisco is one contract and one point of contact, not three trades waiting on each other.
San Francisco is the city we have quoted more than any other. In a city house the space for a sauna is usually there but rarely obvious, and the answer tends to come from standing in the garage, on the roof deck or in the back bedroom with a tape measure. That first site visit is free.

Fitting a sauna onto a San Francisco lot
Space is the first question here, and the city answers it differently from the suburbs. Many San Francisco houses sit on narrow lots, with a small rear yard reached through the garage or down a back stair. Everything for an outdoor sauna has to travel that route, so a kit carried in by the panel, or a cabin framed in place, often beats one that arrives whole.
Indoors, the usual candidates are the ground floor behind the garage, a basement room, a large bathroom or a top-floor room. In a flat or a condo the building has a say as well; our guide to saunas in condos and HOA buildings covers what a board usually wants to see before it signs off.
On a roof deck, a sauna is a structural question first: what the roof can carry, how the cabin is anchored, and how the power gets up there.
Then there is the weather. The western neighborhoods sit in the fog belt, and closer to the ocean the air carries salt. Both are hard on exterior wood and hardware, so an outdoor sauna on the west side gets weather-grade cladding, a sealed finish and corrosion-resistant fittings, on a base that keeps the wood off damp ground. More in our site prep guide.
Sauna permits in San Francisco
A sauna's new 240V circuit needs an electrical permit, and whether the structure needs a building permit depends on its size, whether it is attached and where it sits. In San Francisco, permits go through the Department of Building Inspection, which takes applications on its PermitSF portal; the department says that from September 14, 2026, most over-the-counter construction permits are available only on PermitSF.
As a licensed general contractor, we confirm what your project requires before we start, file the permits our work needs and meet the inspector. The wider picture is in our Bay Area permit guide.

San Francisco sauna FAQ
San Francisco questions, straight answers.
Can you put a sauna on a San Francisco roof deck?
Sometimes. It depends on what the roof structure can carry, how the cabin is anchored and how a 240V circuit reaches it. We assess all three on site before recommending a sauna up there, and we will say so if the roof is the wrong place.
My back yard is only reachable through the garage. Can I still have an outdoor sauna?
Usually, yes. We plan around the access: a kit carried in panel by panel, or a custom cabin framed in place, gets through a doorway that a finished cabin never would.
Will the fog ruin an outdoor sauna in the Outer Richmond?
Not if it is built for the fog. On the west side we use weather-grade cladding, a sealed finish, corrosion-resistant hardware and a base that keeps the wood off wet ground; our maintenance guide covers the yearly upkeep.
I bought a sauna kit online. Will you assemble it in the city?
Yes. We assemble kits from any brand, like the Finnleo NorthStar 46 we installed in San Francisco in May 2026. Prefab assembly starts from $1,490, with the electrical quoted separately.
