Who builds saunas in Hillsborough?

YOURSAUNAS, a licensed California general contractor (CSLB #1150020) based in Mill Valley. We took on a sauna service job in Hillsborough this year, with the parts ordered in September 2026, and we have quoted several Hillsborough sauna projects this year.

Hillsborough is a town of large residential lots, many of them on hills, and that changes the job. The question is less whether a sauna fits and more where it should go: on a terrace below the house, beside a pool, at the edge of the garden with a view. Each spot has its own trade-offs in access, in power, and in what it takes to make a level, dry base on sloping ground. Working those out before anything is ordered is what the site visit is for.

Planning a sauna on a Hillsborough lot

The power run. A sauna heater needs its own 240V circuit. When the sauna sits down the slope or across the garden, that circuit has a long way to travel, and a long run needs heavier wire, a protected route and sometimes a trench. The panel also has to have the capacity for it. We check both on the site visit, because they move the price more than the wood does. Our 240V guide explains what the circuit involves.

The base. On a slope an outdoor sauna needs a level, well-drained foundation: a pad cut into the hill, piers, or a platform built out from a terrace. Water running downhill should pass the sauna, not collect under it. The site prep guide covers the options.

Getting materials there. Steep driveways and long garden stairs decide how a sauna arrives. A kit comes in panels, and a custom cabin can be framed on the spot, so neither has to travel in one piece.

How it looks from the street and the neighbors. A cabin on a visible hillside is part of the view, so the cladding, the roofline and the color are worth deciding as carefully as the interior.

Permits and design review in Hillsborough

The Town of Hillsborough's Building Division lists electrical systems among the work that requires a permit, takes applications through its eTrakit portal, and asks residents to call the Building Division to confirm whether a project needs one.

The town also has its own Architecture and Design Review Board (ADRB).

Whether a particular sauna has to go before that board depends on the project, and we confirm it with the town before the design is final, not after. As a licensed general contractor we file the permits our work requires. See the Bay Area permit guide for the general rules.

Hillsborough sauna FAQ

Hillsborough questions, straight answers.

Does a backyard sauna in Hillsborough need design review?

It can. The town has an Architecture and Design Review Board, and whether your sauna goes before it depends on the project; we check with the town while the design is still on paper.

Can a sauna go on a steep part of the lot?

Usually, with the right base. Piers, a cut pad or a platform off a terrace can all carry a sauna on a slope, as long as water drains past it.

The best spot is far from the house. Is that a problem?

No, but it is a bigger electrical job. A long circuit needs heavier wire and a protected route, and we price that in writing after seeing the panel and the path.

Our sauna is older and needs parts. Can you find them?

Usually, yes. We ordered parts for a Hillsborough sauna service job in September 2026, and in Sausalito we sourced a replacement control panel for a discontinued model.

Can you assemble a kit we already bought?

Yes, any brand. Prefab assembly starts from $1,490, with electrical quoted separately.
