Sauna builder in San Mateo
YOURSAUNAS builds, assembles and wires saunas in San Mateo, San Mateo County, including the part most people forget to plan for: the permitted 240V circuit and a deck or base that can carry the weight.
Who installs saunas in San Mateo?
YOURSAUNAS, a licensed California general contractor (CSLB #1150020) based in Mill Valley. In August 2026 we ran a permitted 240V circuit for a sauna in San Mateo and prepared the deck surface it would stand on. We also build custom indoor and outdoor saunas here, assemble kits and repair existing saunas.
That San Mateo job shows the order a sauna project really runs in. Before a kit is unboxed or a wall is framed, two things have to be right: power that is legal and sized for the heater, and a surface that is level, sound and ready for a sauna's weight. Get those wrong and the nicest cabin in the catalog sits unused, or sits crooked.

What we have done in San Mateo
- 01
240V circuit with permits, August 2026
A dedicated 240V circuit for a sauna, run under permit, so the heater has its own properly sized supply.
- 02
Deck surface preparation, August 2026
The deck surface prepared to take the sauna, so the cabin would sit level and the deck would carry it.
Putting a sauna on a San Mateo deck or patio
Much of San Mateo is built-out neighborhoods of houses, townhomes and condos, and a back yard is often a deck, a patio or a narrow side yard rather than open lawn. A sauna on a deck is a common answer, and a good one, as long as the deck is up to it.
A sauna is a concentrated load: the cabin, the heater, the stones and the people inside all bear down on a small footprint. An older deck built for chairs and a grill may need its framing checked or reinforced, and its surface leveled, before a sauna goes on top. On a patio, the question is whether the slab is level and drains away from where the cabin will stand. We look at both on the site visit.
Then the power. The circuit has to reach the deck from the panel, with outdoor-rated fittings and a disconnect where the code calls for one, and the panel itself needs spare capacity for a heater. Our 240V guide walks through what is involved.
For homes without a yard, an indoor room is the other path: a garage corner, a spare room, or a large bathroom. In a townhome or condo the association usually has to approve the work first, and our condo and HOA guide covers what a board will want to see.
Sauna permits in San Mateo
The 240V circuit a sauna needs requires an electrical permit, and whether the sauna structure needs a building permit depends on its size, whether it is attached and where it sits. The City of San Mateo lists electrical permits among its building permits and takes applications through its Self-Service Online Permit Center.
Our August 2026 circuit in San Mateo was done with permits, and that is how we do every circuit. We confirm the project's requirements with the city before we start. The general rules are in the Bay Area permit guide.

San Mateo sauna FAQ
San Mateo questions, straight answers.
Can a sauna go on my existing deck?
Often, yes, once the deck is checked. A sauna puts a lot of weight on a small area, so we look at the framing and the surface first and prepare the deck where needed, as we did on a San Mateo deck in August 2026.
Do I need a permit for the sauna’s electrical in San Mateo?
Yes, for a new 240V circuit. The city lists electrical permits among its building permits and takes applications online; we file the permit as part of our work.
Can you run the circuit before the sauna arrives?
Yes, and it is often the smart order. With the circuit and the base ready, the day the kit arrives is an assembly day, not a waiting day.
My townhome has no yard. What are my options?
An indoor sauna in a garage, spare room or bathroom, subject to the association's approval. Custom indoor saunas start from $12,900; prefab assembly starts from $1,490, with electrical quoted separately.
Will you service a sauna that is already on my deck?
Yes, any brand. Service and repair starts from $380, and outdoor saunas often need their exterior finish renewed along the way.
