Sauna builder in Berkeley

In Berkeley, Albany and Emeryville our work so far has been on saunas that already exist: moving them, inspecting them and bringing them back to heat. We design and build new ones here too.

Can a sauna be moved to a new spot or a new house?

Yes, if it is built from panels or a kit and the wood is sound, and we did exactly that in Berkeley in July 2026: an existing sauna taken fully apart, carried to its new location, rebuilt and connected to a new 240V circuit. A sauna is not a fixture you have to leave behind or demolish because it is in the wrong room.

What makes a move work is what happens between the two halves. The panels come apart in a known order and get marked. The heater, controls and wiring are checked before they go back in. And the new location gets its own dedicated circuit, because the old one stays where it was. A relocation is a small build in its own right, so we price and permit it like one.

YOURSAUNAS is a licensed California general contractor (CSLB #1150020, Class B) based in Mill Valley. The same crew takes the room down, puts it back up and runs the power, so nothing waits on a second trade.

Saunas in Berkeley houses

Berkeley's housing is old by California standards. That tends to show up in three places when a sauna is planned:

  • Space. Lots in the flats are often tight, so an indoor room in a basement, a garage or an underused bedroom is frequently the better plan than a cabin in a small yard. Our guides on what size sauna you need and converting a room help with the first conversation.
  • Wiring. An older or much-modified electrical system needs a look before a heater goes on it. We check the panel and the route the new circuit will take.
  • Hillside lots. Up in the hills the yard may slope away from the house, which makes the base the main question for an outdoor sauna.

If you have just bought a Berkeley house that came with a sauna, the sensible first step is an inspection. It tells you whether the heater, controls and wiring are fit to use before you fire it up.

Sauna permits in Berkeley

A new 240V circuit needs an electrical permit; whether a structure needs a building permit depends on its size and placement.

Berkeley's Permit Service Center describes itself as a one-stop shop for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire and some public works permits.

The city's Permits Online system takes applications, extra documents and inspection scheduling.

We file and carry the permit as the licensed contractor, and confirm the exact scope with the city first. The Bay Area permit guide also covers what to do about a sauna a previous owner built without permits.

Berkeley sauna FAQ

Berkeley questions, straight answers.

I am moving house in Berkeley. Can my sauna come with me?

Usually, if it is a panel or kit sauna in sound condition. We take it apart, move it, rebuild it and wire it to a new 240V circuit where it lands. We relocated a sauna this way in Berkeley in July 2026.

The house I bought has a sauna. Is it safe to use?

Have it inspected first. We check the structure, the heater, the controls and the wiring, and tell you what, if anything, needs fixing.

My sauna’s heater is old. Can you replace just the heater?

Yes. In Emeryville we removed the old equipment and installed a new 14.4 kW heater in the existing room. We size the replacement to the room rather than matching the old label.

Do you also work in Albany, El Cerrito and Kensington?

Albany, yes: we have done an inspection there. El Cerrito and Kensington are towns where we have quoted projects, and we travel to them for the right job.

Is my Berkeley yard too small for an outdoor sauna?

Not necessarily, but an indoor room is often the easier fit on a tight lot. We measure the yard and the setbacks the city allows and tell you which option makes sense.
