Wet heat, and a room built to take it
A sauna is dry heat in a wood room, with steam only when water meets the stones. A steam room is the other bath: a sealed room filled with steam from a generator, at a lower temperature and close to full humidity. It can be a room of its own or a steam shower, an enclosed shower that doubles as one.
The two are built differently. A sauna's wood breathes; a steam room's walls, ceiling and floor must keep every drop of water inside. So the job is not only the generator. It is the waterproofed enclosure, a door that seals, a ceiling that sheds condensation instead of dripping it, a drain, and a generator placed where it can be reached for service.
We size and install steam generators as part of our equipment work, and as a licensed general contractor we build the room around them. The same team that sizes the generator runs its dedicated circuit, connects the water supply under our plan, and sets the controls, so you are not hiring a tile setter, a plumber and an electrician and hoping they agree.
What’s included · steam
From the generator to the last seal.
- 01
Sizing the generator
A steam generator is sized to the room's volume in cubic feet, and stone, tile and glass take more steam to heat than the volume alone suggests. Makers name their models by the room they serve: ThermaSol's Pro Series, in our shop, is named for its room size in cubic feet. We measure the room and its finishes before we choose, so the generator is never under-sized.
- 02
The enclosure
Walls, ceiling and floor waterproofed behind the finish, the ceiling shaped so condensation runs off rather than falls, a floor drain, and a door that closes tight. The manufacturer's installation manual sets the details for each generator, and we build to it.
- 03
Placing the generator
The generator sits outside the steam room, often in a closet, a vanity or the space next door, connected to the room by a steam line. We place it for proper delivery to the steam head and for access, so it can be serviced without opening a wall. That was always part of our equipment work: equipment installation.
- 04
Power and water, in-house
A dedicated circuit for the generator, protected and sized to its rating, run by our own team under an electrical permit, and the water supply and drain run and coordinated under our GC scope, on one plan with the room.
- 05
Controls and steam head
A control inside or outside the room for temperature and time, and a steam head where the steam enters. Many generators can add aroma, lighting or sound to the same control; our shop carries the makers' controls and steam heads, and we fit and pair them.
- 06
Test and walkthrough
We fill the room with steam, check the controls, the seal and the drain, and show you how to run it and how to look after it, including the generator's own flush and descaling routine where its maker calls for one.
Makers we supply and install
Steam generators from our shop.
Every maker below has steam products in our shop today, and each name opens its shelf: ThermaSol · Mr.Steam · Delta · Kohler · Scandia. The shop also carries steam controls, steam heads, steam shower generators and commercial steam generators for a gym or spa. Any other brand you bought, we install too.
The moat
One team, for the room and the machine.
A steam room fails at the joins: the waterproofing that was someone else's job, the circuit that was sized for a different generator, the drain that was an afterthought. Resellers ship a generator and leave the rest to you. We don't.
YOURSAUNAS is a licensed general contractor, so the enclosure, the generator, the circuit, the water and the controls are built and stood behind by one accountable team, under one set of permits. Want a sauna beside it? We build both: see custom indoor saunas and, for a gym, spa or hotel, commercial saunas.
Steam room FAQ
Good questions, straight answers.
Yes. YOURSAUNAS designs and installs steam rooms and steam showers across the Bay Area: the generator sized to the room, the waterproofed enclosure, the controls and steam head, the dedicated circuit and the water, all by one licensed team.
What is the difference between a steam room and a sauna?
A sauna is a wood room heated dry by a heater and stones, with a burst of steam when you ladle water. A steam room is a sealed room filled with steam from a generator, cooler than a sauna and close to fully humid. They are built from different materials for different conditions, and we build both.
Can you turn my shower into a steam shower?
Often, yes. A shower becomes a steam shower when it is fully enclosed to the ceiling, its walls and ceiling are waterproofed for steam, its door seals, and a generator is installed nearby with a steam head inside. We look at the shower, the space for the generator and the power before we say yes.
What size steam generator do I need?
It depends on the room's volume and what it is lined with: tile and stone take more steam to heat than the volume suggests, and glass more again. We measure the room and choose from the maker's sizing, rather than from the box's headline number.
Where does the steam generator go?
Outside the steam room, usually in a nearby closet, vanity or utility space, within the distance its maker allows. It needs power, water, a drain line and access for service, and we plan all four with the room.
Does a steam room need permits?
Usually: the generator's dedicated circuit needs an electrical permit, and building work on the enclosure may need its own. We check what your city requires, pull the permits under our license and carry the inspections.
What warranty comes with a steam room?
Our standard terms give a 1-year limited warranty on workmanship from the date of project completion. Manufactured components, including sauna heaters, controls, doors and equipment, are covered by their respective manufacturers' warranties. The generator, its controls and its steam head carry their makers' terms; the terms for our work are in the contract before work starts.
